  • Advocacy Groups

    Advocacy Groups
    During the 1930's, a group of parents started to form advocacy groups. These groups were fighting for the equality of education for their disabled children. Disabled children back then were completely excluded from the public education system. No disabled children were able to attend school during this time and their parents formed the advocacy groups to fight for their rights to an education.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled against segregation in schools based on race. The court said the segregation was against the principle of the 14th amendment of the constitution. Based on this, advocates for the disabled started to point out that if it was unfair to deny education based on race, then it was also unfair to deny education based on disabilities. After this movement is when changes started to help the disable children community.
  • Mental Retardation Facilities Construction Act

    Mental Retardation Facilities Construction Act
    In 1963 President John F. Kennedy passed this Act as part of his initiative(New Frontier) program. President Kennedy passed this act to support the construction of community service facilities for adults and children with mental retardation. This act also provided federal help to build mental retardation research centers. As part of this Act also facilities with university-affiliated training were open.

    Mark was a very important period of the history of the Special Education. The 1970s brought big changes to the lives of students with disabilities.Their lives during this decade changed completely the way people understood their needs. In 1973, The Rehabilitation Act ensured the civil rights to all the people who are disabled and special accommodations for students with dissabilities at school.

    In the year 1975, the EAH Act was approved. EAH act is Education for All Handicapped Children Act. This Act gives the children with any disabilities to obtain free education. The education for these children had to be free and in a appropriate way. Thousands of children were benefit from this act.
  • Irving Independent School District V. Tatro

    Irving Independent School  District V. Tatro
    Amber, a student was denied help, was required to go to the bathroom once a day. She needed assistance to help her with her catheter during school, unfortunately the help was denied. The Supreme court was involved in this issue and approved the help that was needed while at school. The Supreme Court established that when a service is neccesary otherwise the student will not received the proper education and a non-doctor trainned person can help, then the school must provide this accommodation.

    In 1990, President Bushed signed the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). ADA Acts is non-discriminatory act against individuals with disabilities. This act ensure that all students with disabilities had an adequate participation in all the school activities. The schools are responsible for make special changes in their practices and policies to ensure that all of their students with disabilities participates all the time in their schools activities.
  • EHA Became IDEA

    EHA Became IDEA
    In 1997, EHA Act made a huge revision about the needs of the children. They decided to change their name to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). The idea of the new program was to provide individual accommodations for students with disabilities. IDEA also incorporated the ITPs ( individualized transition plans,) to help the students get prepared for their lives as adults.

  • No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
    Between the years 2001 and 2004, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was created. This act opened a new window of opportunities for the students with disabilities at their schools. NCLB Act made a big step in education by adding technology assistance for the children this disabilities. NCLB also provided school loans that helps schools obtain the technology needed to accommodate this students.
  • Court Confirms Reimbursements for Special Education

    Court Confirms Reimbursements for Special Education
    The court approved reimbursement for special education tuition. This approval is very important for students that do not find their needs covered in public schools. Some parents found themselves forced to registered their children with disabilities on special private schools. These private schools are able to fulfill their needs.The court approved to reimburse the private education tuition even if they never attended public schools.
