  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    The nullification crisis was a crisis during Andrew Jacksons presidency. It was created by the ordinance of nullification. It declared that the federal teriffs of 1828 and 1832 were unconstitutional. The south were extremely opposed to the tariffs because they were doing nothing to help them and impeded foreign trade. This crisis would irritate relationship between the north and south. Without the ordanance of nullification, the civil war would not have been started.

    The North Star was a 19th century newspaper in the us that was made in 1847 and ran till 1851. This was important because it was one of the most important anti-slavery newspapers at the time. It made statements about the constitution being a pro slavery document.

    The Compromise of 1850 was a package of 5 bills passed in the United States in September 1850. It defused a four year dispute between the free states of the north and the slave states of the south.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    A series of violent political confrentation that involved the free states and the slave states that took place in kansas. The violance was provoked by the kansas nebraska act. This act declared that popular sovereignty would decide whether Kansas would be a slave or free state.

    It allowed the people who lived in kansas and nebraska to vote whether or not they wanted to allow slavery there. Slavery won the vote and kansas and nebraska would not become states. Later the anti-slavery people outnumbered the pro-slavery people and they became states.

    The dred scott decision was that slaves were not protected under the constitution because they were property and not people. This also declared the Missouri compromise as unconstitutional.

     The Election of Abraham Lincoln
    Although they were contemplating succeding from the union before lincoln became president, him becoming president sent them over the edge. They worried lincoln would abolish slavery, which would destroy the souths economy.

    South Carolina was the first state to succede after Lincoln became president. This was the begining of the south begining to succede and the union began to disolve

    Formation of the Confederate States of America
    Confederate states of america was a government set up from 1861-1865. This was a government set up by the states that had succeded from the union. This was important to the civil war because the confederates were pro slavery and were fighting againt the union, which were antislavery. The confederates would eventually be defeated by the union in the civil war.
  • Abolitionist Movement

    Abolitionist Movement
    The goal of the abolitionist movement was to immediately emancipate all slaves and the end of racial discrimination. This was a big problem because the North and South did not agree on the issue of slavery.
