    The U.S.S. Maine was used to bring home U.S. citizens in Cuba. In a harbor in Cuba the ship blew up killing 260 men. This became a battle cry for war in America

    After the United States overthrew Queen Liliuokalani, Sanford B. Dole took over as leader. Eventually in 1898 Congress proclaimed Hawaii as a territory and was later became a state in 1959

    In the treaty Spain freed Cuba and gave the islands of Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S. and sold the Philippines for $20 million

    After the U.S. fought Spain out of the Philippines, the U.S. took control over the Philippines like Spain did. In 1899 the Philippines rebeled under Emilio Aguinaldo.

    In 1903 the U.S. agreed to a deal with Panama that would allow them to build a canal through the newly formed Panama

    In 1904 the first Monolopy came down from the Sherman Antitrust Act and President Roosevelt. The Northern Securities Company controlled a monolopy in the Northwest of the railroads.

    Starting in 1906 new health reforms were arriving in America. First with the Meat Inspection Act which required strict cleanliness in the buildings. Then Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug act which required companies to put labels on everything they sold.

    In 1906 a muckracker named Upton Sinclair wrote a book about the meatpacking industry. The book tells about the poor conditions when handling the meat.

    In 1913 the 17th amendment was passed allowing the citizens of the states to elect their own senators instead of the state legislature.

    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand was suppose to be the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, but while in a "parade" Gavrillo Princip stepped out of the crowd and shot Franz Ferdinand. This is known to be a major reason for WW1

    Germany tried to send Germany a telegraph through American lines and was intercepted and shown to the president. The note basically told Mexico to occupy the United States by getting into a war with them so that we wouldn't join the war.

    After many cruise liners ships were destroyed by German U-Boats the United States declared war on German. Saying that they were fighting for the peace of democracy around the world.

    On November 3rd Austria-Hungary, one of Germany's allies surrendered to the Allies. Also on this day German sailors rebeled against the German authority. Eight days later Germany surrendered to the Allies.
