  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine is the best known U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. The doctrine warns European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs.
  • Opium wars

    involved the Anglo-chinese disputes over British trade in China and China's soverieghty. There were two Opium wars.
  • Treaty of Nanjing

    Was the peace treaty that ended the first Opium war (1839-42). Occured between the Qin dynasty and the United Kingdom. It was the first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treaties on the ground; therefore, Britain had no obligations in return.
  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    The treaty had opened the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to American trade and permitting the establishment of a U.S. consulate in Japan.
  • Boer War

    Also known as the Transvaal Rebellion. Was fought between Great Britain and and the South African Republic.
  • Open Door Policy

    Secretary of State, John Hayes, created the open door note and dispatched it to the major European powers.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    It was an anti-imperialist uprising that took place in China.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    An Addition to the Monroe Doctrine created by Theodore Roosevelt. Occured after the Venezuela Crisis of 1902-03.
  • Revolution of 1911

    It was a revolution that overthrew China's last imperial dynasty, and established the Republic of China.
