    Matthew Perry to Japan
    American Matthew C. Perry sailed to Japan to trade between the two nations. A trade agreement came out of this called the Treaty of Kanagawa.

    Indian soldiers rebelled against the British. However, the British were able to shut down this rebellion within the year and Parliament actually ended up tightening their control on India. This was the end of the East India Company's dominance.

    David Livingstone was sent to southern Africa to convert Africans to Christianity and end the business of selling captured Africans as slaves. He was not heard from in several years and to the New York Herald sent Henry Morton Stanley to search for him. He was found on November 10, 1871.

    Peasants set siege on European section of Beijing for months. The Chinese government allowed this to happen. Europeans finally defeated them.

    The Boers fought with the British in the early 1800s regarding land and slavery. The Boer War was the first modern "total" war. Britain won the Boer War.
