    Immigration Day
Today is finally the day that I, Wu Tong, was finally going to immigrate to America by myself, and get away from the famine and debt and war in China. I'm a young Chiinese, and I'm very smart and very strong, so I think I'll do well in America.
  • American Troubles

It's been hard providing for myself. I have a job cleaning stables, but the whites that work there, too, are being paid way more than me. I don't know what do about this racism.

Finally I'm moving out West. There is land for a low price there, and farming jobs so I can support my family! This will be great!
  • Crushed

    Crushed
I found a farming job, bought land, built a house, and I was ready to have my family move over here. Then I found out about the Chinese Exclusion Act passed in 1882. The Act forbade my family from immigrating. I was furious, now it seemed like I would never see my family again.
  • New Life

I have a house, land, and a farming job. Also, I met a lovely Chinese woman and we are to be married soon. I have a new life and I like it.

  • The Shooting

    The Shooting
Oh, what a dreadful day. Some white men ran into our part of town, shooting blindly, Several people were shot, including my wife, and she died. I have my daughter, who is almost six to care for. I don't know what'll happen.
  • My Life in a Nutshell

I'm growing old. My daughter is getting older, and learning to be a seamstress after a mostly peaceful childhood. I have remarried, and retired from my job. I miss my family back in China and my first wife terribly, but my life is going well right now.
