Ship to New York
My daughters, Isabella and Rachel, and I have been on the ship to New York. We have been on the ship for 3 days and were almost there. Tomorrow we will arrive. I am ready to get there because the ship is crammed. The rooms are very small. The room my daughters and I are staying in has one bed which we have to share. There is also only one bathroom on my floor which is the bottom floor because I couldn't afford anything else. -
Arriving to Ellis Island
I just arrived in Ellis Island. My two daughters Isabella and Rachel are excited to be here but I am nervous about what might happen to us. I have to find a job soon or else I won't have enough money to take care of my daughters. I came to New York to get a good job because in Germany my husband worked. I was an at home mom, But then my husband died while mining.I came here because I needed a job that would earn myself enough money. Luckily, I saved money so that I can buy a house right away. -
Trianlge shirt waist Factory
I am working in New York at the Triangle waist shirt factory. My Boss isn't fair when paying me though. Still, I am getting more money then I did in Germany. I am an examiner in the factory. I earn just enough money to pay for a place to live and food for me, Isabella, and Rachel. I hate my job because it is crammed, I cant talk and the employers watch me to make sure I dont do something wrong, but I'm forcing myself to keep it because of my daughters. -
Racism
Now that I know how to sew and make clothing I decided to make me and my daughters there clothes so that I can save money. With the extra money I want to save up so I can look for a better place to stay. My house is cramped and the people that live next to me are against eachother because of there race. As my daughters and I are looking at houses I realize how bad racism is around New York. I try to avoid it to stay safe. Once we found a descent house I bought it. -
Triangle Shirt Waist Fire
My boss finally moved me up to a better position as a finisher in the factory. Instead of working on the ninth floor now, I was moved to the bottom floor. For once I am actually getting a fair payment. It didn't last long though because of the fire. Somehow the factory caught on fire and had spread fast. So many of the workers died, but luckily I was on the first floor and got out fast. After the fire I didn't go back. to the factory for a couple months. -
Moving to Germany
Now that the Triangle waist shirt Factory is safer I am working again. I got remarried a couple years later to a man that works at the factory. He also lived in Germany. Now that my daughters are older they decided to move back to Germnay. My husband and I both have families back in Germany so we decided we wanted to move back too. We are saving up money so once we have enough we will take a ship back. For now were living in an apartment because we sold the house to make more money also.
