Aboriginals
Aboriginal’s are believed to be on Australian land for over 60,000 Years before English settlers discovered the continent. Some of the food the aboriginals contribute to the current Australian food layout are damper and many native fruits like Quantong's. -
English Discovery & Settlement
After English explorers discovered what is now called Australia, they immediately sent ships full of convicts from the overcrowded prisons to settle & colonise Australia. Some of the foods the English bought were bread and animals for food like sheep and chickens. -
Gold Rush
Over 500,000 people migrated to Australia during the Gold rush & began to mine for their hidden fortune. There were diverse cultures came in the wave of settlers & with them they bought their own country’s foods. The majority of people that migrated to Australia were Chinese. Some of China's foods are fried rice & spring rolls. -
Labouring
From this point until the early 1900’s, labourers from Melanesia migrated to Australia to work in the Queensland sugar plantation. Many Afghan cameleers began to explore and open up the Australian outback. The afghans bought with them Kebabs and the Melanesian bought traditional dumplings and tortillas. -
Immigration Restriction Act
In the 1900’s the Federal Parliament passed the Immigration Restriction Act, which made it really hard for immigrants to get into Australia. This act was mainly targeted at the Chinese and South-Sea Islanders as they were the main immigrants before this act was enforced. Because of this not many cultural food were introduced into Australia at that time. -
"Populate or Perish"
In 1945 countless citizens and fighter were lost to WWII. Because of this decrease in population Australia started advertising to get people to migrate to replenish the population. They used the slogan ‘populate or perish’ and they negotiated to have over 2 million people accepted into the country. The Immigration Restriction Act was lifted & people were then allowed to migrate into Australia. Some of there food are sandwiches & Cornish pasties from England & dumplings from China. -
"Boat People"
From the point of 1970 onwards people came on boats from East Timor overload-ed with people fleeing from the Vietnam war. At the time that they were arriv-ing Australia was in the middle of a fierce debate about the coun-tries involve-ment in the Vi-etnam war. An-other heated topic was multi-culturism and whether the country was will-ing to take on board more im-migrants. Some food the Viet-namese bought were cold-rolls and Pho. -
Asylum Seekers
From 1990 to now Asylum seekers come to Australia on boats from countries which are currently involved and at war. They have fled to stay alive and start a new better life here in Australia. Some of the countries that asylum seekers come from are Middle Eastern countries like Saudi-Arabia Iran and Iraq as well as Sri-Lanka. Some of the foods these countries have bought with them have been baklava, baba ghanoush from the Middle East and gotukola sambol from Sri-Lanka.
