Death of Parents
A terrible fire started in a nearby factory and spread down the entire street. My parents perished in the fire and I managed to save only the smallest amount of my personal possessions. There is no one here in England left to take care of me! -
Immigration to the U.S.
My mother often spoke of her brother who went to find his fortune in America, so I've taken a leap of faith and used the remainder of my savings to buy myself a ticket to America. I hope I'll be able to find my Uncle when I get there. I think I remember my mother telling me he owned land in the West... -
Detained at Ellis Island
The ship arrived at Ellis Island, but when the officials found out my Uncle wasn't waiting for me I was thrown into legal detention! I have no idea how long they'll keep me here, but I think I have a plan that will get me out. Then maybe I can go find my Uncle. -
Escaping into NY
My plan worked! After disguising myself as a young boy named Samuel I managed to make my way out into New York! I've found a place to stay for the night, but I'll need a way to make money...and fast. -
Finding work in NY
I've manged to secure a job at a textile factory. It's tough work, but it makes good money and I've sent a letter to my Uncle telling him I'm here. Hopefully he'll send word soon and I can join him in the West. -
Out On the Streets
It's been many months and I've had no word from my Uncle. But that isn't the only bad news...my true identity has been discovered! I was thrown out of the factory and my lodgings. I'm not sure how much longer I can survive on the streets. If my Uncle doesn't contact me soon I dare not think what might happen! -
A Letter at Last!
Finally my Uncle has contacted me! He sent me money for train tickets, with some instructions on how to find him in the West. I can't wait to finally see the great Western Frontier! -
Racing for Land
I've arrived in the West and met my Uncle, but the adventure doesn't seem to be over yet! My Uncle hopes to gain some of the land being given away through the Homestead Act. However in order to do this you have to race to the acreage you want! My Uncle is too old to ride in the race himself, so has asked me to go in his place! I can hardly imagine how terrifying and exciting this is going to be! -
A Homestead in the West
The land is ours! It will be some time before our house will be complete and crops will be planted, but already I feel at home. I have a feeling my Uncle are going to be very happy out here. There's no telling what tomorrow may bring!
