Immigrant A - Joseph Heyns

  • Birth

I was born on October 13, 1897. I grew up with my mom and dad, I was an only child. I grew up in Germany and I was always judged and hated for my religion, I am Jewish. Ever since I could remember I wanted to leave and go somewhere that I was accepted and could practice my religion without being judged. Coming to America might be the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.

    Arrival in Ellis Island
When I arrived at Ellis Island me and my wife were separated for 3 hours. We finally met each other at the medical examination but she told me she had trachoma and was forced to go back home. I told her that I would go with her but she refused and told me to stay here to get a job and send money back home.

    Finding A Job
Today I was walking around the city and i saw these amazing skyscrapers. I watched the workers that were building and i wonder if i could work there. I talked to some guys that were down below instead of the top and I asked them about the job and they pointed out their boss to me and I talked to him. He offered me a job right away and I gladly accepted because I needed a job as soon as possible. My new boss told me I can starts tomorrow.
  • A Roof Over My Head

    A Roof Over My Head
Today I have gotten a home. At my work there are a lot of other immigrants and six of us made a deal that we would share a place together and we will all help to pay to stay there. We all divide our paychecks so for one person pays their part of rent, their part of food, and they can do whatever they want with the rest of their money. The place we live in is the size of a large bedroom, we never complain about the small space because at least we have a roof over our heads.
