Hitler's Rise to Power

  • Hitler becomes a German citizen

As a result, he was allowed to run for President against Hindenburg. He was the first politician to campaign by plane, with the slogan 'Hitler over Germany' (created by Josef Goebbels).
  • Hitler becomes Chancellor of a Coalition Government

(the Nazis have a third of the seats in the Reichstag).
  • The German Reichstag is destroyed by fire.

The Nazis are probably definitely responsible for the planning and execution, but they blame the communists and force a General Election.
  • The Enabling Act passed

For four years, Hitler's government has legislative power, making him a virtual dictator. He declares that the Nazi Party is Germany's only legal political party. All other political parties and labor organizations have been abolished. Individual German states lose their autonomy, and Nazi officials are appointed as state governors.
  • Hitler withdraws from the League of Nations.

In the following months, he trebles the size of the German Army and ignores the arms restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles.
  • Hitler becomes “Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor”

After President Hindenburg's death, Hitler takes the title of "Fuehrer and Reichskanzler" and abolishes the position of President.
  • Anschluss with Austria (Outlawed by Treaty of Versailles)

Hitler wanted all German-speaking nations in Europe to be a part of Germany. To this end, he had designs on re-uniting Germany with his native homeland, Austria. Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, however, Germany and Austria were forbidden to be unified.
  • Invasion of Poland and start of WWII

On September 1, 1939, German forces under the control of Adolf Hitler bombard Poland on land and from the air. World War II had begun.
