  • Beginging of the internet ARPANET

    Predeccessor to the internet. It wasused to share workload between a network of scientific computers.The ARPANET was created by the US military as a failsafe in case the USSR destroyed all their information that is only stored on one computer. The idea was to share the information btween multiple computers as a back-up. While it was never needed for its orginal purpose it did lead to the Internet in a way.
  • Email

    Invented by Ray Tominson made a private message system that would be call electronic Mail/email. He was able to do this using the ARPANET syste
  • international packet switched service

    A collaboration between the general post office in the UK and the western union international and tymnet in the USA would Build a internation shared network. It worked by each company sending packets of information to each other in order to comunicate or send data much faster than the physical paper could arrive to its destination.
  • newsgroups, bulletin boards

    There was now a new use for computers where for the first time users would be able to learn of news and events in other countries or areas without having to wait for the papers or news to report it. These were mainly only downloadable and not a simple click and read that we experience now.
  • 10000 host

    In 1987 there were 10,000 internet users....
  • First commercial dialup

    The first serious commercial dialup services, offered by CompuServe, Prodigy and America Online were made available in 1995. By the end of 1996, there were an estimated 14 million US households using dialup services for online access. By the end of 1998, the United States had more than 75 million users online, with the overwhelming majority utilizing dialup service as their main source of Internet connection.

    The world wide web is a network of interlinked pages with information, videos and audio regarding anything that has been uploaded to date.
  • First search engine

    created by Alan Emtage a university student in montreal. It was a script based search engine meaning it had various protocols for searching the web and thus would significantly longer than ones we have today. Archie is still running today...

Some people will use the internet just to access their Facebook page. Because of this, people can stay in touch when they are far away, and keep in touch with old and new friends and family quickly and easily.
