The main reason for the creation of ARPANet was that the soviet union had launched the sputnik satellite that spurred the US Defense Department to figure out alternative ways to relay communication in the case of nuclear outbreak.
  • ARPANet is launched

The First working prototype of the internet was launched, Its used packet switching to allow computers to communicate on one network .Packet switching is what the internet uses to send information up till now, It is when the information to be sent is broken up, sent through different routers and then re-assembled into readable information.

Ray Tomilson Discovers that its possible to send information buy adding the "@" symbol to the computers host name and recipients name. This will end up as the emails we all know now as "Gmail" and "Yahoo Mail".
  • Fathers of the Internet

Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn (the duo said by many to be the Fathers of the Internet) publish "A Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection," which details the design of TCP. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a standard that defines how to establish and maintain a network conversation by which applications can exchange data. TCP works with the Internet Protocol (IP), which defines how computers send packets of data to each other.
  • The birth of SMTP

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) was made to facilitate better transfer of mails. They also help to process and deliver messages to several recipients.
