  • Sputnik is Launched, US starts DARPA Project

    After Sputnik was launched by the U.S.S.R, the U.S. started development on something called DARPA. Which stands for "Defence Advanced Research Profect Agency". One of the many technologies that came out of DARPA was a networking technology that eventually led to the Internet.
  • ARPANET Starts

    ARPANET was one of the products created by DARPA. In 1969, 4 computers were hosts on the ARPANET and in 1972 there were 30 computers hooked up on the ARPANT across the U.S.

    ARPANET Expands

    Computers across the world start adopting the same protocols as used in ARPANET and start connecting to the ARPANET for scientific research and military use.

    NSFNET

    The NSFNET (National Science Foundation Network) started laying down the infestructure (wires and cables) necessary to send messeges across the internet with good speeds.
  • Tim Berners - Lee (Created HTTP)

    Essentially, invented the World Wide Web. He came up with a new way to use the internet that people cuold use. Those ways were websites and webpages. He created the HTTP protocal and made a web browser with help from other people.

    GOPHER

    From 1990 to 1993, the protocol "GOPHER" became much more popular than HTTP until 1994, around the time when the web browser Mosaic gets released.
  • Mosaic Web Broswer

    People started to use the World Wide Web because Mosaic was much nicer and much easier to use than all of the other web browsers. This is when people started to take note of the internet.
  • 1994 - The Year of the Web

    The web started to seriously grow, more people started to use the internet and the internet started to get very popular.

    Internet's Explosive Growth

    The world Wide Web grows at incredibly rates. More browsers are being made as well, Microsoft's IE and Netscape were battling to be the more popular web browser, where IE eventually won and became the most popular web browswer.

    1998 - Present

    Internet and World Wide Web become synonomys words, and the World Wide Web expands to the point where it is everywhere, in your home, in your office, in your phones, and in your ovens.
