    The establishment of radio within South Africa

    According to Fourie (2007), This is the time in which radio was established in South Africa. During this time Radio started off with Amateur broadcasts which later on developed into experimental broadcasts, regular broadcasts and then the African boradcasting company was established.
  • Period: to

    The South African Broadcasting Corporation was established.

    According to Fourie (2007), During this period of time, the formaton of the SABC took place and, although most of the broadcasts were done in english, some were done in Afrikaans based on section 14 of the broadcasting act of 1936.

    Post World Ward II Expansion

    During this period of time, News services were introduced as radio services were gradually developing within Britan and the United states, which influenced South Africa. During this time, the SABC was only allowed to provide 4 news bulletins a day and they had no control over what was going to be broadcasted until they developed an internal news department in 1950. The Schoch commission was also implemented to investigate financial matters and later on Black listeners were also catered to.

    A period of transformation

    According to Fourie (2007), Along with better reception and more channels to select from, frequency modulation services were introduced. Three new radio stations were also introduced. This process was very costly however they brought in more listeners. Stations also grdually became automated and more african language services were being introduced such as radio stations which catered more to black listeners.

    A period of challenge

    According to Fourie (2007), During this period of time, teevision was introduced on the basis of moral and ethical grounds. Independent radio was also introduced meaning that othe radio stations either than the SABC were introduced.

    The rationalisation of broadcasting

    According to Fourie (2007), During this period of time, major changes in the broadcasting environment took place. The first one being the Steyn commision which consisted of a deep investigation into the various media forms. Subscribtion services were also introduced. The next change was also the introduction of the Viljoen Commision. The Viljoen commition was predominantly aimed at regualating broadcasting by forming an independant broadcasting authority.

    A period of restructuring

    During this period, community radio was introduced. This is when new local stations from geograhical communities were being intoduced into the radio space. A regulatory authority for broadcasting was also introduced during this period. The SABC was also restructured as it had now become the nations public broadcaster. Black empowerment also played a huge role in public broadcasting. They were introduced to public broadcasting because they has been previously disadvantaged.
