    Schools created weekley menus with penny lunches and five-cent noon dinner that would include baked beans and a roll for 5-cents, cocoa or milk for 2 center and crackers or ice cream for 1 cent. Vegetable soup, creamed beef and macaroni with tomato sauce were also found on the menus.

    Headed by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson, Chef Earl Harrington fed 5,000 or more children in 92 school districts.

    National School Lunch Act
    Signed by President Harry S. Truman and also called the RIchard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. Created to prop up food prices by absorbing farm surplus while giving students food and nutrition.
  • National School Lunch Act Amended

    Changed the apportionment of school funds to places like Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii and Alaska. It also stated that the amount of money received "should not be less than that amount which will result in an allotment per child of school ge in the State"

    This made it so that the funds provided would be apportioned based on the participation rate for the state and the assistance need rate for the state.
