  • First Broadcast

    Italian inventor, Marconi, sent and recieved the first broadcast. Some believe that he wasnt the first to do this. Many people think it was a case of good PR

    Wireless Telegraph

    During this timespan, radios transmitted by wireless telegraph. In wireless telegraph, no soound was carried. The way to communicate was to switch it on and off, creating morse code.
  • Audion Tube

    In 1906, Lee De Forest, created the audion tube. The audion tube is what is now the amplifier (amp). Many people think Canadian inventor, Reginald Fessenden came up with the idea
  • Music Broadcasting

    In 1906, music was broadcasted on the radio for the first time. It was broadcasted on an AM frequency because FM wasnt invented yet. Music later became the saving item of the radio after TV became popular and took the radios audience
  • Titanic

    When the Titanic was launched in 1911, radio was getting big. Radio could be used on boats because iots frequencies reached where poles couldnt. Radio saved many lives on the Titanic. If it werent for Radio, nobody would know about the iceberg and almost everybody wouldve died
  • Radio Stations

    In 1920, Frank Conrad invented the first radio station. He put the music player right next to the microphone. The radio station he invented was called 8XK, and is still ran today out of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and is called KDKA
  • AM

    AM, amplitude modulation, was created wiothout the intention of broadcasting voices or music. AM is created by changing the amplitude of the sound waves. AM goes from 535KHz - 1605KHz. AM remained the main way of broadcasting throught the next 30 years known as the 'Golden Era of Radio'.

    Radio makes money by broadcasting commercials. In 1922, WEAF aired a 10 minute 'commerical'. The 'commercial' was made to toll an apartment complex charging $50
  • FRC

    Everyone having their own radio stations (Uncloe Charlie), was becoming too popular. The Federal Radio Commission (FRC), was established in 1927 to organize the licensing of transmitters. The FRC also assigned radio station frequencies, call letters, and power limits. The FRC is now whats know as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

    The Golden Era for Radio

    The time period of the 30's - 40's was the Golden Era of Radio because it was during the Great Depression. The radio offered a medium of escape from all of your problems. The radio in this time period was known as a family medium, meaning the whole family could listen to the radio at the same time.

    FM, frequency modulation, is made by changing the frequency of the sound waves. FM was petented in 1933, by Edwin H. Armstrong, but commercial FM broadcasting did not begin until the late 1930's

    As TV picked up popularity in the late 30's, all the advertisers went to TV. A lot of radio shows jumped ship because they were out of business. Radio had lost a lot of money.
