History of Radio

  • Marconi's first transmission

    In 1896 Marconi made his first radio transmissions. The transmissions only went about a mile outwards.
  • First "public" broadcast

    Marconi flashed the results of the Kingstown Regatta to the offices of a Dublin newspaper, thus a sports event was the first ever "public" broadcast.
  • First Ship to Request Emergency

    In 1899 the first ship to request for emergency help was the R. F. Matthews.
  • A.M. (Early 1900's)

    Lee Deforest invented the amplitude-modulated which allowed for the creation of the AM radio, and also for a more diverse amount of radio stations which lead to the Uncle Charlie radio stations.
  • Uncle Charlie Radio

    Uncle Charlie radio stations were radio stations that just about any one could make as long as they had the money or the equipment, which ment that your neighbor could have his own radio station. The problem with this is that companies paid money for commercials, but the commercials were rarely heard because of these Uncle Charlie stations taking up alot of the "air."
  • First Live Music

    Reginald Fessenden broadcasted the first live music, voice, and recorded music in history.
  • Nobel Prize

    Marconi recieved a nobel prize for the wireless telegraph.
  • Radio from an Airplane

    In 1910 the first radio transmission from an ariplane was sent. This type of radio frequency is kown as VHF.
  • Titanic Sinks

    Titanic Sinks
    The Titanic aka the "Unsinkable" ship sunk shortly after crashing into an iceberg, but many survived the sinking of the titanic because of the wireless telegraph aka the Radio.
  • Military controls the Air

    In 1917 the US military took control of all radio broadcasts at the start of the first world war so that no foriegn spies could gather information from the radio and the radio frequencies.
  • FM radio

    Edwin Armstrong invents the wide-band frequency modulation(FM) which is later used for the broadcasting of music, because FM radio allows for a broader rrange of sounds and a more HD quality sound.
  • Voice Radio

    Voice came to the radio in 1921 which is known as the golden era which was in the same time frame as the Great Depression. (20's - 30's)
  • MLK I Have A Dream

    With the use of the radio and the television MLK's I Have A Dream speech made news all around the country. This showed what the radio and television were truly capable of and also brought alot of fame to the radio and television by bringing very important news that would change the racial segregation in the US for ever.
  • Compact CD

    The first compact cd is created and allowed for more storage of songs and for songs of greater lengths in a compact disc.
  • MP3 Music

    The mp3 allows for compression of music to be sent over the internet which takes up less storage space(memory). The compact cd starts to become a thing of the past.
