  • First Fleet

    The first ships arrived from Britan full of British convicts to Botany Bay in NSW. This influx of convicts continued over many decades.

    In 1848 the first non- British immigrant ship arrives in Australia from Germany.
  • Gold Rush

    1851 the Gold Rush begun which attracted immigrants from different countries minly from China, Britan and Germany.

    In the 1860's Chinese people became the fourth largest immigration group into Australia after the British, Irish and Germans.

    In 1901 the Immigration Restriction Act was put in place, also knows as the 'White Australian Policy'. This basically banned Asian migration into Australia.

    The commencement of WW1 banned German immigration to Australia and most other immigration to Australia was ceased.

    1929 was a time of Great Depression in Australia and around world causing a holt in immigration.

    From 1939-1945 World War 2 was in play which caused immigration to once again cease.

    After World War 2 there was a demand for Australia to increase their population, 'poulate or perish'. During this time many people came to Australia. And due to the damage from the War many people migrated majority being from Italy followed by Germans and Greeks.
