    First known drawings

    People have been drawing since the beginning of time. They have used it as a way to express themselves. Some of the oldest drawings found have been done in caves in Europe. Most of them were either scratched or carved into the walls.

    Ancient Egypt

    Egyptians would carve their daily life and religious Gods on their walls and stone slabs
  • 1400 BCE

    Middle Ages

    Their drawing were produced to show their religious messages and stories of the Bible. Drawing became a predatory stage in creating paintings during these times.

    Renaissance

    The Renaissance took place in Italy and during this time drawing became recognized as respectable art. Drawing became the foundation of all art.
  • 1400

    Renaissance

    Since art became so popular artist started to find new ways to draw and one of those ways was the use of softer material like chalk and charcoal.

    Renaissance

    During this time art became more popular and affordable because of how easy it was to get materials. Because of this more portraits became popular and a well-known house hold item.
  • Baroque Period

    During this period a new way of drawing came about which included livelier forms with flowing lines. Artist also started to use watercolors and ink washes.

    Another thing that came about during this period was the Counter-Reformation which was a period of Catholic resurgence. The Leading artist also used another style called open composition which was the element of the image run off the edges.

    Pencils were manufactured during this time period and it quickly became a very popular tool used by the artist. Ingres and Goya used these new tools to capture everyday scenes. After this people began to question the traditional way of drawing.
