    Ancient Egypt

    early egyptians decorated the walls of their temples and tombs by carving dailey life, hieroglyphics and religion deities, or gods as early as 3,000 BC

    Ancient Greece

    Ancient greeks have several lasting artifacts of their drawing. The greeks would paint onto vases, the paintings would exhibit their graceful, decorative use of drawing.

    Paper

    Paper is finally invented in 1100 CE making it alot eaiser for drawings and sketches to be done. Before paper was invented, artists would draw on the canvas they were going to be painting then, just paint over it.

    Middle Ages

    During the middle ages drawings were primarily used to express religious messages or stories through out the bible. Monks used drawing and painting to illustrate bibles and prayer books for wealthy familys.

    Renaissance period

    During this time drawing became a foundation for all art work, students were trained in drawing before being trained in things like painting, sculpting, and architecture. Also some softer materials became more popular, things like chalk and charcoal were used alot more often. Artists such as michelangelo and de vinci used chalk and coal on some of their sketches.

    Portraiture

    Portraiture became popular household items among wealthy families. By the commercial value of artwork, artists started to earn more money through their pieces sold on commission. Artists also started to put their own monogram on the pieces of art that they created.

    Peter paul rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn

    Peter paul rubens made great advancements in techniques of drawing. Also Rembrandt van Rijn, became one of the greatest draftsmen for his ability to convey form, movement, and emotion in only a few lines.

    Baroque period

    During this period a new style of drawing was intruduced using livelier forms with flowing lines, also in this time artists began to use water colors more for different peices of art.
  • Counter reformation.

    Counter reformation was during the Baroque period. During this time a new style of drawing emerged. This style was called open composition, What open composition means is that it seems like the art is jumping off the page. An example of an artist that used this style of drawing is peter paul rubens

    drawing and pencils

    Pencils were first manufactured in the 19th cetury and quickly became the most preferred drawing tools. during the 19th century impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, and fauvism became increasingly popular.
