    On the 26 of February, 1606, Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon and the crew of the Dutch ship, Duyfken, landed on the Pennefather River, on the western shore of Cape York, Queensland. Willem Janszoon's visit is the first recorded visit of Europeans to Australia. They were also the first Europeans to meet the Aboriginals. He sailed from Bantam, New Guinea, to Cape York, Queensland. Janszoon came here to map around 320km of the coastline that he landed on.

    On the 29th of April, 1770, Captain Cook and the crew of the 'HM Barque Endeavour,' landed on the east coast of Australia (NSW). He founded a place called Botany Bay. He observed the Aboriginals and reported of them living close to shore. He couldn't tell if their dark skin was part of the clothes or their colouring. Cook took possession of the south east coast of Australia and called it New South Wales. This land would now belong to England.

    In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip decided to colonise Australia. He set up the colony in Sydney Cove. This decision was made because the prisons in Britain were full and so that farmers who had commited crimes could set up a new farming land in Australia . Around 1,500 convicts, crewmembers, marines, settlers, civilians and farmers came to Australia in the First Fleet. The First Fleet was a group of 11 ships that came to Australia on what we now know as Australia Day.

    In 1851, the Australian gold rushes started. There were areas all around Australia where gold was found and people came from all over Australia and even the world to search for gold. The impact was that many people left their families to find gold and become rich. They also left their jobs and homes to search for this precious material.The gold rushes of the nineteenth century and the lives of those who worked the goldfields (called diggers) are remembered as huge parts of Australia's history.
  • The Federation of Australia was Formed

    The Federation of Australia was Formed
    On the 1st of January, 1901, the Federation of Australia was formed. This meant that the colonies at that time, which were all governed by the British, had agreed to come together to form the Commonwealth of Australia. They once had their own laws, but then they came together and created laws for the whole country, as well as having some of their own laws. The effect this had on the people was that the citizens of Australia had new laws and combined states to form our country.

    In 1914, July 28th, the first ever World War started. Australia had just over 152,000 men who were injured during the time of the war. Australia was invovled in the war beacuse they were under the Commonwealth control. They were against the Germans and their allies. Although our side won the war , around 60,000 of the original 416,809 soldiers enlisted, were killed. The impact on Australia and the world was devastating
    because so many lives were lost. Families were separated.
  • Today

    Today
    Today, Australia's relationship with Britain is great. We are allies in war and both part of the Commonwealth. Our monarch is queen Elizabeth, the 2nd. Queen Elizabeth, the 2nd, has made a very good relationship with Australia by visiting all the different states to meet cultral and religious people. In parliament, we have someone called the Serjeant-at-Arms. They carry the Mace, which represents the authority of the monarchy.
