  • George Vancouver

    George Vancouver
    Vancouver was born In England in 1757. At the age of 15, he left home to pursue his sense of adventure with captain Cook. He found himself in the Caribbean. Later on, once he was done exploring the pacific coast he retraced his movements and put it into maps. George made great friends with the natives in his newly discovered areas and traded molasses and bread to the natives for sea otters and their pelts. he died in 1798 in Surrey, Engalnd

    Captain James Cook assisted Vancouver
    James was a British explorer born in Yorkshire, Scotland. He married Elizabeth Batts he fought in the seven years war capturing the fortress of Louisbourg. He was a navigator, a sailor and in the royal Navy. In total he took three voyages taking him near Hawaii, New Zealand and the coast of Newfoundland. He produced large scale accurate maps of the Newfoundland coast. Hw was killed while his bots were being repaired in Hawaii in a fight with the aggressive hawaiians.

    NWC got 55% of shares while HBC only got 45%. HBC got to use and keep their name for the whole operation. The shift in trading companies led BC to re-arrange their trading posts. It was set up that New Caledonia, Thomson River, Watershed and Columbia District. Each place got assignee a seperate part of BC to magage

    Established the limits of their (Russian America and British claims) land possessions on the Northwest Coast of America and the Navigation of the Pacific Ocean, explained and showed the boundaries between Russian America and British claims and possessions in the Pacific North West and North America at 54-40 degrees. Set up an important border of whos land is whos. This later sparked up the debate of should the border really be there and later it ends up getting chaged based on this debate.

    This gave the colony more money to work with and a leg to stand on with trade. Sets up the economy for a bright start. Drew immigrants in due to newfound resources. Set up a good foundation for an established town and buildings.

    This was a joint agreement between Russia America Company and the Hudson Bay company to monopolize trade in this area.. It was also later established that liquor would not be traded with the natives.

    Made trade more accessible on the island, set up troops and an army on the island, created a solid and dependable economy on the island for settlers and natives to live and trade. It was set up to strengthen British control on the island. Most southern part of Canada. Set up to keep out excessive amounts of immigrants coming into Canada. Overpopulation stimulated and started the action for this fort.

    If the two large countries never signed the treaty and the border between Canada and the US stayed at 54-40, BC now would be very different due to the fact that we in BC would be a part of the US and probably not a province or even BC.

    The for Vancouver was moved to Fort Victoria for fear of its trapping rights would be lost which, pushed the british colonial office to designate the territory a crown colony.

    Billy Barker was the initial man to strike gold up north of the west coast. This caused the building of the cariboo road for development of the mainland colony and for tax collection.

    Given in blankets by contaminated blankets given by the wite people of the colony at the time. The blankets were signature HBC blankets riddled with disease. They gave them to the Haida to kill them off because the white people thought they were getting in the way due to the largely growing population.

    Construction began in 1862 and took four years to complete. The road was finished in 1866. It was designed to make money from the miners going to and fro Barkerville (the big gold rush town) during the 1860's. As they were working on the road, gold started to disappear due to over mining/panning and the road wasnt done yet. The road came at a big cost of 750,000 and revenue was declining as the road was finishing. The road was used to encourage people to visit and move to the interior.

    The two colonies merge to solve the financial crisis brough on by the new influx of immigrants. This gave the area more power and the drive to find a capital that represented the area accurately. It showed the government that they meant buisness because now as a whole they took up a great deal of space.

    Amidst the busy workers working in the new colony soon to be BC,one man,"gassy" Jack bought and opened up a bar in the center of Vancouver.This man sold alcohol which was a delicacy among the worker men who all worked for "dry camps".The men would row across the Fraser to come to the new established pub and drink.This pub became very popular, people started moving nearer to the pub and a community started to form.The public attributes this area's sucsess to Jack,they named it "Gastown" after him

    The whites during this time really looked down upon the chinese at the time. Once this passed, chinese started to get mad. Later on in 1907, riots will occur due to pent up anger. Due to thses momentus events. The chinese will finally get the right to vote and get universal respect later on due to their courageous acts and their patience.

    Last spike was in Craigellaiche hit by Donald Smith. Once the train was done, this secured a transcontinental pathway for resources, goods and armies. The signing point for Bc in joining confederation.

    George Oppenheimer
    This man came from a rich german/jewish family who immigrated to Vancouver as a young man. Her bought up many hectares of land in and around Vancouver and he offered up his land for free for the train as a terminus. Like many there was something in it for him as well, by having the train end for free on his property, he knew that the value of the property would skyrocket and that is exactly what happened. He later came on to be the second (and best)mayor of Vancouver.
  • Billy Barker

    Billy Barker
    He was a famous english prospector born in Hull, England who found large amounts of gold at a high value in the Cariboo of BC. He founded Barkerville and started the economy there. He was the man that created the massive growth in the city due to the fact that he found gold. Many flocked there to see what he had found and to get some for themselves. The city today is still preserved. He smoked 3o0 cigarettes a day which some say lead to his death in 1894.
  • Fort Vancouver created

    George Simpson wanted to use the land more effectively/efficiently for trade and the economy. By doing this, trade incresed, a port was created, train evenually came into Vancouver and masses started coming into the area as a stop for the gold rush and excellent land later on. The fort was run under the Chief Factor John McLoughlin
