First, settlers were Dutch (from the Netherlands) in 1606 but they did not settle. They left because of the Aborigines attacking.

Captain James Cook arrived in New South Wales. He did not care that the Aborigines were there and took land for England.

British came on ships called the "First Fleets". They left England to form prison colonies. After forming the the colony in 1788 the prisoners settled in Australia.
