In 1606 Dutch Europeans sailed to Australia. The Dutch did not settle there .The Dutch were later attached by the Aborigine's and abandoned. -
In 1770 Captain James cook sailed to Australia. Cook named this area New Wales. Although the Aborigine's were living there he totally ignored them, and took over the land. -
In 1787 British ships called the '' First Fleet'' left England with some conflicts to establish a prison. -
In 1788 the British prisoners began to settle in Australia. New South Wales was officially a prison. -
In 1833 to 1850 Port Arthur, Tasmania was the destination for the worst British Irish poisoners. Port Arthur had one of the toughest security. The destination of the dead was where most dead prisoners' were taken. -
In 1861 government officials created boundaries for the colonies. These colonies are still going on today. Some colonies became independent colonies. -
On January 1, 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was established. Melbourne served as a national capital until Canberra was completed in 1927. -
In 1901 Australia was considered '' White Australia'' because they would not allow non- Caucasians to immigrant to Australia. Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 restricted migration to people primly of European descendant. -
Federal government began passing laws to help the Aborigines in 1967. The action was to help the living conditions of the aborigines. The aborigines went on a strike and demanded equal wages. They became the first successful land claims by indigenous people. -
In 1986 all legal ties with the British Empire were severed. Today Australia is a parliamentary democracy also a constitutional monarchy, with Elizabeth II as there queen.
