  • Democratic-Republicans

    Democratic-Republicans
    First organized political party in history. Also called the anti-federalists. Jefferson opposed Hamilton's ideas/policies. Jefferson thought that Hamilton was opposing the constitution itself. At first Jefferson and James Madison thought that the party they created was designed to only defeat John Adams. republicans were so good that "the federalists ceased to exist as a party"
  • Federalists

    Federalists
    The followers of Hamilton. Opposed Jefferson and said that Jefferson opposed the concept of national government itself.

    Jefferson and Republicans defeat the federalists.
  • Jacksonian Party

    Jacksonian Party
    Often called the second party system. Causcus system became unpopular when the caucus candidate ran third out of four in the general election. The party convention was invented, getting rid of the caucus system.
  • Second realignment period

    Jacksonian democrats came to power.
  • Anti-Masonic party

    Anti-Masonic party
    Opposed the Masons. They sucessfully elected local and statewide candidates. A nationl convention was held in 1831 in Baltimore.
  • Anti-jacksonian republicans

    Anti-jacksonian republicans
    Nominated Henry Clay for president. they went against the Jacksonians.
  • Third realignment period

    Third realignment period
    Whig party collapsed and Republican party under Lincoln came to power. The democrats had spilt into twogroups - the first led by Stephen Douglas, the second led by John Breckinridge. Republicans won, and breckinridge and his people came in second. After that point, the two major parties recieved different sources of support. parties that "tried to straddle the fence" were destroyed.
  • Mugwumps

    Mugwumps
    Also called progressives. A faction of the republican party. Composed of reformers that opposed patronage. They disliked "party machinery". They were afraid of heavy influx of immigrants to the US and that other parties would organize them into "machines". their strong suits were advocacy and articulation.
  • Fourth realignment period

    Republicans defeat the democrat William Jennings Bryan. economics was a big issue at the time, because a series of depressions came about. It hit the farmers hard- they were not recieveing enough for their goods and they were not able to pay their bills. Bryan won the democratic nomination, finding out afterwards that the platfrom of the party was populists. Other democrats anti- populist left the democrats and went to the republican side to support William Mckinley.

    Fifth realignment period
    The democrats under Roosevelt came into office. This change, like in 1896, was about the economy. the New Deal coalition was to bring in workers, southern whites, northern blacks, and jewish voters.
