over night the us doubled in size with the purchase of louisiana from the french in 1803. The louisiana puchase cost 15 million dollers. we bought so Napolean couod have money. Originaly Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans for water. But then he just bought louisiana. -
Corps of discovery expadition
The Corps, which was a select group of volunteers, were led jointly by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. There goal was to establish trade relations with indeins. Another goal was to find the shortest water route to the pacific ocean. They were the first us citizens to cross the continental line. At this same time lewis word journal about plant and animal species. -
war of 1812
This war was between British and United states. It tok place in Northeast US and Canada. First British invaded Washington DC and burned down the white house. In this war there was no real winner or loser. The americans did this war for national pride. The war ended with the treaty of ghent. The largest battle of the war was at New Orleans and it didn't matter becasue the war was over and they didn't know. Andrew Jackson got famouse in he battle of New Orleans and got the name "Old Hickory". -
Florida territory
The new Territory of Florida was second only to Georgia in land area east of the Mississippi River. This huge size, coupled with the state's under populated peninsular, posed serious problems to the state's future development. Northern Congressmen feared that Florida would be divided into two slave states. This disrupting the delicate balance of having equal slave and free states in the United States Senate. Jackson felt there were more obvious problems: a lack of population. -
The Monroe doctrine
The Monroe doctrine is where the US did not want to interfere in the affairs of European nation. The US would recognize, and not interfere with, colinonies that already existed in North and South america. North and South America where to be off limits to future colonization by any foreign power. The US would not worry about the Europeans problems. -
Texas
Texas fought Mexico for 13 days strait to gain there indopendence to become a part ofthe US. Mexico wanted all the Americans that moved to Texas to speak Meican. Santa Anna was Mexicos president and he took an army to try and defeat Texas then the Texans declared indopendence Sam Housten and his Texas army captued Santa Anna and they released him for excharge for their indopendence. Texas elected Sam Housten to become president and then they joined the US. -
Indian removeal act and Trail of Tears
The indian removal act and trail of tears was a dispute between the Native Americans and the US government there were five major tribes seminole, creek, choctaw, chicasaw, and cherokee. The US troops would force Indians out of their homes, the troops used force if they did not move on their own. Familys of indians would get split up and they had very little time to collect their stuff. 1 out of every 5 indeans would die. The had to give up their land so american setterlers could move there. -
Mexican and American war and The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The US and Mexico could not agree on the border beetween them. US declared war in 1846 and this became known as the Mexican and American war. US defeated Mexico and the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. Mexico gave up Calfornia, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico to the US. The Gasden purchase set the current border between Texas and Mexico. -
Oregon territory
The Oregon territory is where Great Britain and America both claimed Oregon territory. The territory was located between 42 degrees latitude and 54 40' deegrees latitude. President, Polk, wanted to go to war overy the entire territory to add US.Polk won the election and the Northern border of Oregon was established at the 49 degrees latitude. "54 40" or fight meas it was popular slogan that led Polk to victory against all odds.
