    Thomas Jefferson the president at the time wanted to buy the New Orleans from France, although they offered all of the Louisiana territory. Jefferson was happy to hear Napoleon’s offer, however the constitutional did not allow the president to buy land. He wanted the land so bad, he believed in the republic of small farmers, and he wanted land for them. He had purchased it for 15 million dollars. They were instructed to look for new plant and animal’s species, and find the water way that went through the whole area. First Jefferson Meriwether Lewis, a young officer, who hired a map maker and outdoorsman for his lieutenant, William Clark.

    They were with everyone else traveling west and decided to follow a "shortcut." It turned out to make the trip longer. They broke an axel on their trailer and hjad to stay over night. It snowed 6 feet that night. They were stuck there for 6 months. They ran out of food in 3 weeks. Kids died from the cold and they went to canablism. One person survived surounded by bones and blood.
