    John West founded and ran the first residential school in Canada in 1831. It wasn't until the Indian Act of 1876 that the Canadian government began to promote the establishment of residential schools as a means of "civilizing" Indigenous children and assimilating them into Canadian society. The Gordon Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan was Canada's last federally run residential school, closing in 1996.
