    Sharecroppers were free African-American former slaves that wished to gain their independence. Wealthy people would rent some land to them and they would give back a portion of the crops they grew.

    A man named Jim Crow would put on a blackface and perform a show in front of white people. His acts were offensive towards blacks. Because of this, laws were made to segregate the blacks and whites.

    Plessy vs Ferguson was a court case that was held in the supreme court that talked about segregation by race in public areas. The judges decided that some public places can be segreagate but they have to be "seperated but equal".

    The Scottsboro trial was a trial held against 9 black men who were accused of raping two white woman. Their case went to court in 1937 and the longest prison sentence for them was 20 years.
  • People hear that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson

    People heard about how Atticus was going to be Tom Robinsons lawyer and they did not like him because he was defending a black man. Atticus thought that defending Tom Robinson was "something that goes to the essence of a man's consience".
  • Jem and Scout Going to Church

    When Atticus had left and Calpurnia had to take care of Scout and Jem, she took them to an all blacks church. When they got there, most of the people didn't like the fact that there were white kids to their church but Calpurpunia's son, Zeebo, didn't care.

    Calpurnia, Jem, and Scout talk about how even though Tom Robinson is in jail, no one is willing to hire Helen Robinson, Tom's wife. They talk about how anyone would be glad to hire they weren't racist.
