The British settlement and the Australian Colonies

  • James Cook Founded Australia.

    James Cook Founded Australia.
He had been on the sea in his ship for many months, looking for the south land. He finally found it after many months of what seemed like endless travelling on the sea. He was very pleased with himself for being the first human to set foot on the new land and became famous. Pictures and files were written about James Cook and his life. His family also became very famous and became wealthy.
  • Captain Cook met Aboriginal people on the eastern shoreline.

Captain Cook met Aboriginal people on the eastern shoreline.
When Captain James Cook stepped onto Australian ground for the first time he saw black people. For a moment he thought that these people were Africans and had gotten there before he had. He was quite disappointed for he was worried he went sailing for months for nothing! Luckily when he saw that they had no clothing he realised that they must have been strange new animals or natives.
  • The American Revolution, a war with the British and the Americans.

The American Revolution, a war with the British and the Americans.
This war was started by the Americans so they could be a free country, not controlled by the British. If the Americans won (which they did) they would no longer have to serve Britain and take in all their dirty prisoners. When the Americans won Britain had to figure out what to do with all the thieves!
  • Britain became overpopulated, and the Governor started to send prisoners on hulks.

Britain became overpopulated, and the Governor started to send prisoners on hulks.
America would no longer accept convicts from Britain, so Britain became crowded. The rich and wealthy demanded more space and less dirty, poor people. Even the hulks were getting overcrowded. In Britain in those days it was likely to find people that stole or robbed things from you because there were more poor people than rich. The government finally made a very important decision. They had to find a new land.
  • The farming grew bad in Britain.

The farming grew bad in Britain.
Crops were not growing to well. The poor people had to farm for the rich so they couldn't afford to buy many cows, sheep or plants. They didn't have much Flora and Fauna at all. Rich people grew angry and hungry so they set up their own farms.
  • Britain became very crammed up and squished.

Britain became very crammed up and squished.
The Government looked through some old found and found Captain James Cook's. They read about his expedition to the Southern Land and decided to go there themselves. They set sail with many convicts aboard. It would take many long months and they were just at the beginning.
  • After a year of travelling far and wide the British finally saw it, the Southern Land. They came to Botany Bay and hankered the ships.

They came to Botany Bay and hankered the ships. The British immediately saw that it had poor farming soil and the rough bumpy ground was no good for planting seeds to grow crops. They turned their backs on it and went up the coast a little more, determined to find more moist and flat land.
  • The fleet travelled a bit further around the coast and found a much better place. They named it Sydney Cove.

This would later become New South Wales. They set up tents and began their colony here. The convict or slaves if you prefer had to hoist up the tents for the rich people and start making proper houses. After they did this they were locked up and given some stale bread leftover from the long trip to Australia. They named the place they were staying in, New South Wales.
  • The British's first contact with the natives/Aboriginals was actually quite good.

The British's first contact with the natives/Aboriginals was actually quite good.
The natives danced and sang songs for they thought that the British were giant birds. The British thought 'what nice fellows' and danced a lot with them. Later on though, after the British had widened there territory by building more houses, the Aboriginals grew angry. They begun to steal the British's crops and animals. The British soon found what they were doing, they started to guard their crops and animals so the Aboriginals wouldn't steal it.
  • After a little while in Australia, about a year, Captain Arthur Phillip met an Aboriginal named Bennallong.

After a little while in Australia, about a year, Captain Arthur Phillip met an Aboriginal named Bennallong.
They became good friends and Phillip taught him English. Bennelong became the translator of the colony. The Governor, marines and convicts all showed him respect and gave him a uniform to wear.
  • In Britain diseases are a real threat to people.

When the British came to Australia they brought some of their diseases with them. This spread to the Aboriginals who suffered terribly. After a little while there were only 2% of Aboriginals left.
  • The Aboriginal people grew angry with the British settlers.

The Aboriginal people grew angry with the British settlers.
They were taking their land and weakening them. One day when Phillip was walking along a beach the Aboriginals grabbed a spear and threw it at him. It went right through Phillips shoulder! This caused a little war between the marines and the Aboriginals.
  • The Aboriginals gave in to the British.

The British were slowly taking over their land and gaining ore and more power over them. The Aboriginals suddenly realised that they were never going to win. They eventually gave in to gain medical treatment for the sick.
  • The second fleet arrived carrying more convicts.

The second fleet arrived carrying more convicts.
Britain was still overcrowded so Captain Arthur Phillip had sent for another fleet to send in more goods like food and bricks. The second fleet arrived in 1790.
  • Captain Arthur Phillip captured two Aboriginals.

He sent them to England to be experimented on and looked at. Then those Aboriginals got killed and stuffed so the British could look at them and examine them. Their stuffed bodies were put into a museum display for everyone to look at.
  • Western Australia was founded.

    Western Australia was founded.
A little while after the settlement Western Australia was founded. The British explored more of Australia and found the west coast line. They named it Western Australia.
  • South Australia was founded.

    South Australia was founded.
About 60 years after the first fleet arrived SA was founded. The British had looked further along the bottom coastline and found the shore. They names it South Australia.
