    James Cook was Great Britain's explorer, he was the first to see the Aboriginal people in 1770 on the 28th of April. He was born on the 7th of November 1728 and died on the 14th of February 1779.

    Arthur Phillip
    Arthur Phillip was a Royal Navy Officer and the first Governor for New South Wales. He was Governor from the 7th of February 1788 to the 10th of December 1792. He was born on the 11 of October 1738 and died on the 31st of August 1814 at the age of 75.

    In 1770, Captain Cook discovered the eastern coast of Australia, he named it New South Wales. He reported that Botany Bay would be suitable for a new British colony. Botany Bay was named after a large variety of plants that Sir Joseph Banks, Captain Cook's Companion had collected.

    Britain's prisons started to be overcrowded
    In the 17th and the 18th century Britain became overcrowded, they needed to relocate the prisoners somewhere else. This all began after the war of the Spanish Succession ended in 1714. Many farmers, sailors and soldiers lost their jobs, they then had to steal so they could survive. There was also another reason why prisons became overcrowded it was from the lack of food and employment. The British soon decided that they had to keep their prisoners somewhere else, so they moved to Australia.

    Around 1778 when the British prisons became overcrowd and the British decided to go to Australia, many people that were good farmers, builders and more also went with the First Fleet to Australia. They went so they could for example help with the farm lands or build houses. That is one reason for the settlement.

    On the 13th of May 1787 the first fleet left Portsmouth, Britain on there journey to Australia to start up a colony. On the way they stopped at many different places. They stopped at the Canary Islands on the 3 of June 1787, Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, that was in August 1787 and in October 1787 the first fleet stopped at Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

    On April in 1788 and 1789 the colony was hit by a disease, it was called smallpox. It was brought over by the British people. The disease killed 70 per cent of the Aboriginal people. Many Aboriginal people died quickly as they had never had any disease before, they didn't know what to do or what was going to happen.

    On the 26th of January 1788 the British arrived at Botany Bay after a long time at sea. When they got to Botany Bay the British didn't think it was a good place to set up so they moved to Sydney Cove. On the 26th of January 1788 they set up their colony in Port Jackson and raised the British flag. This day is now known as Australia Day.

    The British Settled at Botany Bay. This was the first place they settled before hey moved to Port Jackson (Sydney Cove). They moved to Port Jackson because they didn't think that Botany Bay was a good place to live.

    Arabanoo, an Aboriginal Man was captured by the British at many on the 31st of December. Phillip wanted him to be captured so that the British could learn more about the Aboriginal People. He was taken to a settlement where a convict guarded him.

    Between 1789 and 1791, the colony at Sydney Cove was short on food. They had to move to Norfolk Island because people suffered from food starvation.

    Bennelong was captured by the British on the 25th of November 1789. He was captured because Phillip thought he would help the British understand the Indigenous culture more.He was captured because Phillip thought he would help the British understand the Indigenous culture more. Once Bennelong was captured the British people made him dress like them, in lots of cloths. This was a big change for Bennelong because I was use to wearing almost nothing.

    In the 1790s and the 1800s the common response from the government to the Aboriginal peoples residence was to expect that any Aboriginal people that threatened farms or settlers would be punished. The soldiers hunted down and killed groups of indigenous people that they thought were responsible for stealing food/stock or generally harassing settlers.

    After Bennelong was captured, Bennelong and Phillip became good friends. Bennelong would call Phillip father and Phillip would call Bennelong son. In 1792 Bennelong and Phillip sailed to England together, but a few years before that Phillip built Bennelong a hut around Sydney area. It is now known as Bennelong Point, it is where the Sydney Opera House is.

    One Aboriginal warrior, Pemulwuy led the Aboriginal Residence around Sydney Harbour from 1790 to 1802. He was feared by many of the British Settlers.

    In 1790 Phillip got speared because he captured Bennelong. The spear he was speared with did not kill him. Governor Phillip knew he had done something wrong and it was pay back.

    People went over to Australia for Land Grants
    Some people didn't just go over to Australia because they were convicts, some people went to Australia for Land Grants. Land Grants were given to first settlers so they could farm land and eventually land grants were given to convicts after good deeds or sometime at the end of their sentences. Governor Phillip gave the first land grants out in 1792.

    John Hunter, became the New South Wale's new Governor after Governor Phillip. He arrived into the colony in September.
    John Hunter was a officer for the royal navy.

    Philip King
    After 5 years of being Governor Philip King replaced John Hunter in 1800. Philip King was born on the 23rd of April 1758 and died on the 3rd of September 1808.
  • William Bligh

    William Bligh
    William Bligh replaces Philip King as Governor of New South Wales in March. He was governor from the 13th of August 1806 to the 26th of January 1808. He was born on the 9th of September 1754 and died on the 7 September 1817. William Bligh was an officer for the British Navy and a colonial administrator.
  • Governor Macquarie gave an order

    Governor Macquarie gave an order
    Governor Macquarie was an officer. In 1816, he said that if any Aboriginal people approached the British or was unwilling to leave, then the settlers could drive out with the use of a gun. There was similar encouragement given to Tasmania, Western Australia and most other parts of Australia as well.

    In 1841, New Zealand was announced as a separate colony. It was no long part of New South Wales. The colony was called the Crown Colony. They were there from 1841 and to 1907.
