They followed the Underground Railroad by following the North Star. The North Star always points toward the north which is where slaves would have to go for freedom. But sometimes in the north there would be slave catchers waiting to catch the slaves to bring them back to the south. -

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery her real name being Araminta Ross. People suspect that Harriet was born in March 1822 they don’t know on what day though. Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Maryland. -

When Harriet was thirteen she was hit in the head with a heavy metal weight leaving a wound on her head. This injury made Harriet fall asleep uncontrollably (Narcolepsy). When Harriet was on the Underground Railroad she would fall asleep suddenly while walking and they would have to stop and wait. -

Araminta Ross (Harriet Tubman) married a free black man named John Tubman. Araminta Ross changed her name to Harriet when she and john were married. Araminta got married at 25 years old. -

The U.S. Passed a Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. This law enabling law enforcement officials to help the capture of runaway slaves. Heavy fines and punishments were imposed on anyone who helped the escaped slaves. -
The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad or underground! It was a string of houses, shops, etc. were the escaped slaves would be hidden. They would eventually escape to the north, on some occasions they would be caught and brought back to the plantations. it was about 2,000 miles long and lasted from 1850-1860. -
