  • (September) Reading Assessment Benchmark

    (September) Reading Assessment Benchmark
At this time, all of the students in kindergarten will be tested on various reading skills (letter recognition, sight words, emergent reading behaviors, sentence dictation, and DRA level) to see where they are at this time of the year.
  • (October) Grouping Students

    (October) Grouping Students
After analyzing the data, the teacher will form groups that are homogeneous (function on the same level). Those students who are reading around the same level will be grouped together. These groups can change as the year progresses based on student achievement. There will be 4 to 6 students in each group and will meet 20 minutes daily.
  • (Oct/Jan) Guided Reading Groups

    (Oct/Jan) Guided Reading Groups
The teacher will work with students using small guided reading books that are at the students instructional level. The students will work on strategies they can use to independently to assist them to read. Using visual cues such picture clues and the beginning letters to decode the words they may not know. The groups can meet for 15-20 minutes a day.
  • (January) Reading Assessment Benchmark

    (January) Reading Assessment Benchmark
The second benchmark will be administered to show the growth that each student has made at this time of the year. Using this data the groups will be changed to reflect the current data. Using the same criteria in October.

  • (May) Reading Assessment Benchmark

    (May) Reading Assessment Benchmark
This is the end of the year benchmark for reading assessments for all students. The data will then be analyzed to see the growth of the each student over the entire year. This data can also be used to assist in getting those students who may not have made significant growth this school year the extra help that is needed. We will share this data with students, parents and the teachers for the following school year.
