Japan was holding Guam captive during World War 2. U.S. forces recaptured the island on August 10.

The Organic Act of Guam gave all Chamorros U.S. citizenship. However, they didn't get any voting rights. Today Guam is one of the five U.S. territories with an established civilian government.
