The first Marist Brothers arrived in Australia in 1872 and established schools in Sydney. There are currently 5,000 brothers in 76 countries throughout the world. The true meaning to the word Marist is ‘Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ’.

    Sir Norman Thomas Gilroy KBE was an Australian archbishop. He was the first Australian-born cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. On January the 11th 1953 he laid the cornerstone of the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Philippines. On the 18th of February 1946, and was assigned the title of becoming cardinal-priest of Santi Quattro Coronati, becoming the first Australian-born member of the College of Cardinals.
