After recieving Tyler's letter, Polk asks congress to declare war on Mexico. 50000 people volunteer to be in the army, and Polk hopes the deceration will intimidate Mexico and resolve the Texas border problem. Polk also hopes it will intimidate Mexico into selling New Mexico and California to the US.

The Mexicans tried to hold the Castle of Capultepec while under fire for 14 hours. After unable to get reinforcements, the Mexicans finally succumb and Mexico City was captured by the US.
