Gandhi organizes his first protest against anti-Indian
laws in South Africa -
When the Transvaal government announces that all Indians must register and produce identification on demand or risk deportation, Gandhi asks Indians to peacefully resist. The Indians agree, setting off seven years of protest and struggle between the Indians and government.

Rabindranath Tagore, and Indian poet and Nobel Laureate, refers to Gandhi for the first time as Mahatma. The title means "Great Soul" and is given by Hindus to only the holiest men. Gandhi is not fond of it because he believes all souls are equal.

Gandhi and Smuts, the Prime Minister of the Transvaal, reach an agreement, ending the protests.

Sir Stafford Cripps arrives in India, presenting to the Indian National Congress a proposal for Dominion status (autonomy within the British Commonwealth) after the War.

he Indian National Congress rejects the Cripps proposal, and declares it will grant its support for the British war effort only in return for independence.

Ghandi was arrested for the first time by the british because of his beliefs that indians shouldn't have to fight for independence.

British Cabinet Mission publishes proposal for an Indian state, without partition; Jinnah and the Muslim League reject the proposal.

Lord Mountbatten arrives in India and takes out the agreement for independence and partition.

India celebrated it's independence day August 15, 1947. They are finally free from the British.

Indian independence becomes offifial, so does the partition of two countries, India and pakistan.

January 30, 1948.
