German Unification

  • German Cofederation

    39 German states form a loose grouping with the name, the German Confederation. The Austrian Emprie had control of the states but Prussia wanted to unify them.

    The German Confederation

    Prussia had a mainly German Population. Prussia's army had the most power out of all the armys in centeral Europe. The rioters in Berlin decided to write a lberal constitution for the kingdom.
  • The Zollverin

    A slow process of economic interdependence hit Germany during the Industrial Revolution and pshed the country in the direction of unification. The Zollverin was an agreement made by the Nortthern States of Germany and PRussia to readuce customs duties between them.
  • Liberal Constution

    Demonstrations in Berlin lead King Fredrick William IV to grant a liberal constitution. He transferred his court to Potsdam to be free from the Liberal Provisional Government. Meanwhile all German Parliment met at Frankfurt to try and bring out the unification of Germany.
  • Prussia takes Control

    The Prussian army took control of Berlin, the king supressed the liberal constitution and dissolved the Frankfurt Parliment.
  • German Confederation Restored

    Austria and Prussia restore the German Confederation.
  • Frederick William was succeeded

    Wilhelm I succeeded Frederick to the throne. This was a result of parliment's refusal to give Wilhelm money to strengthen the army.
  • Conservative Junker named Otto von Bismark chosen

    Wilhelm chose Otto as his prime minister. Otto was a master of what came to be known as realpolitik.

  • New states join North German Confederation

    The remaining states of the north joined the North German Confederation. Prussia was dominating this region completely
