Was the peace treaty signed to end the Franco-Prussian War. In its provisions, Alsace, northern Lorraine, and the city of Metz were ceded to Germany. (After the final formation of the German Empire, Alsace-Lorraine became a common province of the empire.) Also, France had to pay 5 million francs in war indemnity. German troops occupied central and southern Lorraine until the indemnity was paid.
