Bismark wanted Scleswig back from Denmark, so with help from Austria, went to war and defeated Denmark and received Schleswig. -
Bismark Declares war on Austria
After helping Prussia to get Scleswig back from Denmark, Austria was not done with Prussia. Bismark now wanted Holstein from Austria, which they had received in Denmarks defeat. Bismark had tricked them really, and they were defeated by Prussia and lost Holstein. -

The Franco Prussian war was extremely signifigant in the unity of Germany because to unite the northern german states with a few of the southern german states, France needed to be defeated. After receiving supposed insults from Ems, France declared war against Prussia and was swiftly defeated. -
