    On this day George Washington was sworn in as the President of the United States.

  • "Mr. President"

    Shortly after Washington was elected, the US didn't have a specific name for there "ruler". Then Congress with the help of Vice President John Adams came up with "Mr. President".
  • Executive Branch

    Congress next step was creating the Executive Branch, and then the arguing began. (Like Washington feared) Eventually they settled with 3 departments (State, Treasury, and War).
  • New Taxes

    A big problem in the government was that they Treasury was empty, to fix this they needed to tax. But they could never agree on how much. In 1791, congress decided to tax Whiskey and other luxury goods.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Many thought of the tax as unfair, then they got together and protested. In 1793 congress lowered the tax to stop the protesting. Washington thought of it as a threat to the authority of the national government. So he sent 13,000 militia troops in to crush the rebels.
  • Farewell Address

    When Washington stepped down after two terms he had a Farewell address for the people and government of the United States. He had to fears for the furture USA. First, dont have two poliical paties because they would become too strong, it would tear the nation apart. Lastly, he said bewear of problems with other countries.
  • Washington stops running.

    After running two full terms in office, George Washington decied to stop running for President. He could have easily won the all the elections held for the rest of his life but he didnt want to become a King so he stepped down.
  • Washington's Death

    On December 14, 1799 the first President of the United Stats of America died.
