Commander Washington and the Revolutionary War
George became the commander of the Virgina militia fighting began between England and the American colonies. The fight began at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. One month after the start of the battle, leaders of the 13 colonies met in Philidelphia and George was chosen to lead the Continental Army. The battle at Valley Forge began late in 1777 and ended shortly the next year. The war lasted 8 years and the colonies won. -
Marriage
George married Martha Custis when he was 26 years old. Martha was widowed with two children. George and Martha moved to Mount Vernon, Virginia. -

Presidency
In 1787, a new government was formed which consisted of a congress, supreme court and a president. George Washington was considered the most loved leader of the United States and he became the first U.S. president in 1789. He was reelected for his second term in 1792. During his presidency, he sighned peace treaties with the Indians, Spain and England. When Pennsylvania farmers refused to pay taxes on whiskey, soldiers were sent to force Pennsylvania land owners to pay the taxes. -
Return home
George Washington returned to his home at Mount Vernon, Virgina after serving eight years as President of the United States. He spent his time riding his horse across his land, his favorite passtime. 15 miles away from his Virgina farmhouse. George witnessed the construction of the city that would be named Washington in his honor. Washington would be known as the capital of the United States. -
Death
George Washington died of a fatal illness at 67 years old.
