The first generation of computers was from 1946-1957. The first computer was invented.
In 1951 IBM built the Sage (Semi Automatic Ground Enviroment). Also Eckert and Mauchly invened the UNIVAC.John Von Neumann made the EDVAC (Electronic Discreet Variable Computer) . -
took up entire rooms, used alot of electricity and generated alot of heat.
-
first large scale general purpose computer
-
IBM built the SAGE. it was used in early air force defence systems
-
Eckert and Mauchly invented the UNIVAC which was introduced to analyze the votes for the 1952 presidential election. The UNIVAC was also the first mass produced computer for general use.
-
In 1952 John Von Neumann made the EDVAC (Electronic Discreet Variable Computer) that had a central control unit which could calculate and output all mathematical and logical problems and had a memory that could be written to read.
-
The second generation of computers was from 1956-1963. . In 1963 the mini computer. In 1964 IBM developed the Real-Time reservation System which replaced the SAGE computer because it was smaller. In 1964 BASIC was founded.
-
The integrated circuit marked the beginning of the third generation. In 1958 Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit. This revolutionized computing because all the electrical components were on a single silicon semiconductor chip which drastically reduced the size of the computer.
-
In 1963 the mini computer was developed (PDP-8). This computer was about as big as a fridge and used transistors and magnetic core memory.
-
The third generation of computers was from 1964-1971. In 1958 Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit. In 1968 Intel was founded by Gordon Moore. In 1968 Magnetic Core memory was replaced by a microchip.
-
In 1964 IBM developed the Real-Time reservation System which replaced the SAGE computer because it was smaller
-
In 1964 BASIC was founded, it was a programming language that was necessary to be used as a training language.
-
In 1968 Intel was founded by Gordon Moore, Intel developed more sophisticated memory chips.
-
In 1968 Magnetic Core memory was replaced by a microchip.
-
The fourth generation of computer is from 1971-2012 present. In 1971 Intel developed the microprocessor. In 1972 Gary Kildall and John Torode developed the CP/M.In 1977 Apple 2 Wozniak and Jobs released the Apple 2.. In 1983 Apple announced the Lisa.
-
New operating systems were also developed during this generation which allowed the running of multiple applications at the same time.
-
In 1971 Intel developed the microprocessor.
-
In 1972 Gary Kildall and John Torode developed the CP/M which was the first operating system for microcomputers.
-
Torode also developed hardware to connect a diskette (floppy disk) to the CPU.
-
In 1977 Apple 2 Wozniak and Jobs released the Apple 2, it was cheap and had 19 Kb RAM and was ideal for playing video games.
-
In 1981 IBM released its first personal computer (the IBM PC) an Intel 8088 processor.
-
In 1983 Apple announced the Lisa, a computer that used a mouse to move a cursor on a screen to select commands; it was the first commercial computer to use a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
-
In 1990 Microsoft released windows 3.0.

The Fifth generation is from Present- Future. The fifth generation is based on artificial intelligence expert systems and natural language.Word processors that could be controlled by means of speech recognition may be part of the fifth generation or programs that could translate documents from one language to another.Parallel- processing, super conductors, expert systems, speech recognition systems could all be inventions of the fifth generation
-
The fifth generation is based on artificial intelligence. There could be intelligent robots that could see Artificial intelligence has to do with computers preforming tasks that require human characteristics.their environment.
-
Intelligence systems that could control the rout of a missile and defense systems that could fend off attacks could be part of the fifth generation.
