There was a gossip that the riffles of the indian soldiers, the sepoys, had been greased with beef and pork. The Indians consider the cow to be sacred and the muslims don't eat pork. With this in mind they found it chocking that the British riffle providers had done such thing.

The Partition of Bengal was created. The provincess were to big so what the British did was that they divided Bengal into 2. The Hindus section and the Muslims section. The problem with this was that having to religions seperated made it hard for them to reach their goal of independence.

By this time the British decided to take back the partitions and organize them diffrently.

By this time the Indians returned home from the war with the Britsh having promised many good things in return for helping them in WW1. But instead of being rewarded they were treated as second class citizens. Also the nationalist started to act in violent ways to show to the British that they hated them.

To add on, the British decided to pass the law of Rowlatt Act. This law included that all protesters would be sent to jail without trials for as long as 2 years. The people who were educated from the west side thought that it went against their rights.

In this year, the civil party endorsed civil disobedience. Gandhi launched this camaign of civil disobedience in order to weaken the British government's authority and economy over India.

Gandhi decided to start a Salt March. According to the government the Indians could only buy the salt from the government and they had to pay extra taxes. Gandhi and his followers walked 240 miles to the seacost. They started to make their own salt illegally. They evaporated the water and then with that they had the salt. This was also a very peaceful protest.

Finally, the British Parliment passed the Government of India Act, With this it provided self-government and limited democratic elections, but unluckily it did not provide full independence.

By this time, Gandhi was really disappointed in India and how violent people were acting. He went to Dehli were he was a victim of the Nation's violence. In January 30th 1948 Gandhi was shot because an extremist said that he protected the Muslims too much.

The fighting finally came to an end because the United Nations decided to cease-fire. They left the Kashmir under Pakistani rule and the rest under Indian control. Although the UN said to have ended it now a days people still are fighting.
