French Revolution Timeline

  • May 5, 1789 meeting with the Estates-General

    This day was marked as the start of the French Revolution. They also decided to establish new taxes at the meeting.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    The tennis court oath was a key moment that set off the french revolution. At the meeting the men of the National Assembly said they would never stop meeting until the constitution had been established.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    There was a paris mod that was hungry due to lack of food from poor harvests. This was such a big thing because it showed what a force that the people could take on monarchy.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man

    The Declaration of the rights of man sets out the "natural and Inalienable" rights. Some of these rights include freedom, ownership, security, resistance to oppression.
  • Women's March on Versailles

    The women's march on versailles was another big turning point in the french revolution. The women's march brought an end to the great monarchy.
  • Execution of King Louis XVI

    380-286 was the vote number for the execution of King Louis XVI. He was publicly executed because of a trail of treason.

    Reign of Terror

    This was a time period when there were public executions and killings of thousands of counter-revolutionary 'suspects'. The execution of King Louis started the "Reign of Terror"
  • Maximillian Robespierre's execution

    Robespierre and a lot of his followers were arrested in a hotel. From there they were executed.
  • Napoleonic Code is established

    This was when the resulting Civil Code marked its first big law change since the roman times. The laws were focused mainly on property and families.
  • Napoleon Crowns himself emperor

    He was crowned emperor at Notre-Dame de Paris in Paris. He did this so he could lay down the foundation for a future dynasty.

    Peninsular War

    There was a military conflict and it was fought by Spain, Portugal and the UK. The spanish constitution was on result from the Peninsular War.
  • Napoleon and his men march on Russia

    Napoleon and his men crossed a river to invade Russia. The result was a disaster for the French, the Russian army refused to engage with Napoleon and his men.
  • Napoleon is exiled to Elba

    When Napoleon was exiled the French just went back to the Bourbons being restored to power. The reason he was exiled was because his enemies wanted to put him into a place where he could not escape since he was one of the best military rulers of all time.
  • Napoleon dies

    He died because he had been getting sicker for several months and suffering from recurrent abdominal pain. He was also only 51 when he died on an island in St. Helena.
