    Most families depended on agricultural work to make their income, this left them with little or no free time to take part in leisure activities. Most people spent their free time on the land, as without the machinery we have now a day all of the work had to be done manually. This meant that only the upper class citizens could participate in sports.

    This form of football was typically played between neighbouring towns or villages. These matches included an unlimited number of players in each team. There goal would be to drag an inflated Pig's bladder, by any means possible to a marker in each others town.

    During the Industrial Revolution people still worked long hours, so did not have much time for leisure activities. Even though people changed the nature of their work, they still did not have any free time to participate in sports.

    In the 19th Century upper class children started going to public schools, were they would often board and stay in school for each term. These schools would have been very expensive so only upper class children could go. The children would often do sports in their free time as the schools would have good facilities. From 1850 onwards sport began to develop quickly, mainly because pupils had large amounts of free time available to them

    Sheffield F.C. was the first independent football club, making it the oldest club now playing association football. Initially the club played by the Sheffield rules, and did not adapt to the FA rules until 1878.

    A major factor in the development of sport, was when factory owners provided staff with a period of time where people could take part in sporting activities. Most workers had poor living conditions so had to be encouraged to partake in sports, therefore the factory owners realised a happy work force would be more productive, so they encouraged the development of work forces. Larger firms paid for annual trips to the seaside, which introduced eastside holidays.

    The FA, is the English footballs governing bodies. In formation of the association the captains, secretaries and other representatives of a dozen London and suburban clubs playing their own versions of football met to try and form an Association with the object of establishing a definite code of rules for the regulation of the game.

    Originally the goal was just two upright posts 8 yards apart, this caused a lot of confusion in 1866, in which a goal was scored at Reigate, when the kicker ‘raised the ball quite 90 feet in the air between the goal-posts. To try and fix this problem they introduced tape between the posts, which also was a problem as the tape was slack so some goals were disallowed. This was when the crossbar was introduced.

    The tournament is the oldest football competition in the world, the competition is open to any club down to level 10 of the English football league system. The teams in the top 4 leagues are automatically entered into the tournament, while the lower leagues must have played in any other FA tournament in the previous season. In the First FA cup the final was between the Wanderers and the Engineers, with Wanderers winning 1-0

    The first officially international match was between Scotland and England. It took place at West of Scotland Cricket Club's ground at Hamilton Crescent in Partick, Scotland. The match at 0-0 with 4,000 spectators there to watch.

    The penalty kick was officially introduced to the game in 1891, although the penalty spot was not introduced until 1902. Before this the player could kick the ball from anywhere along the 12 yard line.

    Association football has been included in every Summer Olympic Games as a men's competition sport, except 1896 and 1932. Women's football was added to the official program in 1996. Football was not included on the program at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, as international football was starting to be introduced to the game.

    This league was introduced as the highest level of English football, to date there has been a total of 49 clubs have competed in the league. At the end of each season the bottom three teams face relegation to the championship while thee the top four sides are entered into the Champions League. The bottom three teams are replaced by the three teams in the championship. The leagues Title sponsor is currently Barclaycard, hence the name Barclay's Premier League.

    This was a large step in the international game of football, as players were finally gave a chance to compete competitively for their country against thirteen other teams. This competition brought a lot of interest from fans and in the final between Argentina and Uruguay, brought 93000 fans to watch the 4-2 win to the hosts.

    The football match to be aired live on TV, was a specially arranged friendly between Arsenal and the Arsenal Reserves. The match was held in Highbury Stadium. The broadcast was only available to a select number of homes within a close proximity of Alexandra Palace.

    When airplanes were first introduced they allowed people to travel to most countries in Europe at a reasonably low cost. This introduced the idea of playing football teams from different countries. This introduction brought a huge step in the game of football, introducing competitions where teams from different countries could play.

    It wasn't until the 1950s when public transport was started, this contributed to sport as railway systems were made. This allowed large numbers of people to travel around the country and helped to popularise sports like football, rugby and cricket. Roads improved after the 1950s, this helped improve bus and coach travel.

    The Union of European Football Associations is the administrative body for association football in Europe. UEFA consists of 55 national association members. UEFA represents the national football associations of Europe, runs nation and club competitions including the UEFA European Championship, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup, and controls the prize money, regulations, and media rights to those competitions
  • First European Cup

    In the first European Cup there were 16 teams from 16 different countries who competed. The final took place at the Parc des Princes between Stade de Reims and Real Madrid. Real Madrid came back from behind to win the game 4-3. Real Madrid managed to win the tournament the following two season, until they lost in the final to Eintracht Frankfurt of West Germany.

    Sport has developed as a result of what has happened in school P.E, it is a key element of the National Curriculum in schools today. These lessons aim to develop skills that are used in many sports and a great number of extracurricular activities are organised.     The tournament was aimed towards the top men's national teams in Europe, to determine the Continental champion of Europe. The tournament is held every four years. Prior to entering the tournament all teams except for the host nation, compete in a qualifying process. the first tournament was held in France, which was by the Soviet Union, beating Yugoslavia 2-1.

    The competition was first played in 1971-72, where an English final took place of Wolverhampton Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspurs. With Wolverhampton winning the first cup. At this stage there were 64 teams involved in the competition with Liverpool winning the following season. The competition was traditionally open to the runners-up of domestic leagues.

    Southern League Kettering Town became the first British club to play with a sponsor's name on its shirts, after signing a deal with Kettering Tyres which was meant to cost 'four figures.' The Club's Chief executive, Dougan was the person who organised the sponsorship deal, this occurred 1 month after his appointment. After the match the FA demanded that the Sponsor be took off the shirt or else they'd face a fine. It was not until 1977 that their ban on sponsored shirts were lifted.

    The first £1 Million transfer was a transfer between Birmingham and Nottingham Forrest, in relation too Trevor Francis. This transfer helped Nottingham Forrest go on too win 2 consecutive European Cup's.

    The Hillsborough disaster was a human crush at Hillsborough football stadium in Sheffield, during the 1988–89 FA Cup semi-final game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. With 96 fatalities and 766 injured it is the worst disaster in British sporting history. After this stadiums were changed from standing terraces, to all-seater stadiums.
  • Back Pass Rule

    Back Pass Rule
    This rule was introduced to prevent the goalkeeper from wasting time while in play. A goalkeeper is not permitted to touch the ball with his hand inside his own penalty area, after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a teammate. If he touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a teammate. If these offenses do occur the opposition will receive an indirect free kick.

    This competition was introduced to replace the European Cup, and introduced group stages to the competition and allowing multiple teams from certain countries to participate. The tournament is made up of the best teams in each top tier league, only 32 teams across a number of leagues get entered, these teams are split into 8 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group proceeding further through the competition.

    Previously called the UEFA cup this competition was open top eligible European Clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.

    Goal Line Technology was introduced to determine when the ball has passed the line fully beneath the nets. . The objective of goal-line technology is not to replace the role of the officials, but rather to support them in their decision-making. Due to the expense of goal-line technology, it is only used at the highest levels of the games. It is currently used in the top European domestic leagues, and at major international competitions

    Video Assistant Referre
    This technology has been fully introduced to the game yet but is currently on a 2 year trial, the technology can only review incidents relating to goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties. This will allow more controversial incidents to be looked at again to ensure the right decision is made. VAR has not yet been introduced to English football but has been on trial in international fixtures, Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A.

    This Transfer included Barcelona and PSG as PSG agreed to pay Neymar's £198Million buy-out clause. This transfer more than doubled the previous record held by Paul Pogba who transferred to Manchester United for £89 Million.
