  • I began to receive an allowance.

I began to receive an allowance.
When I was about five years old, my parents started giving me an allowance in exchange for doing small chores around the house. This would be categorized as financial literacy, as I became aware of the cost of the things that I wanted, and made a decision to save up for them. The picture I chose represents how I eagerly saved my money in order to buy the things I wanted.
  • I began attending elementary school.

    I began attending elementary school.
My first day of school would be classified under social literacy. I started to learn things about the world around me, and was captivated with the experience. My early school years were incredibly enjoyable, as I learned new things and made new friends. I chose this picture to represent this experience because one of my favorite things in elementary was when the class sat in a circle and our teacher, Mr. Littlefield, read to us. As a result, I began to love reading and learning new things.
  • I started reading Harry Potter

    I started reading Harry Potter
Harry Potter was a very large cornerstone in my life. I had seen the first movie, and my entire family loved it. When I discovered there was a book series, I devoured one after the other and spent hours reading. This event would be media literacy, as Harry Potter was such a large franchise. I chose this picture because one of my favorite things was to compare the movies to the books.
  • I bought a GameCube.

    I bought a GameCube.
I was eight-years-old when I bought a GameCube with my own money. This event would encompass both financial and media literacy, since I deliberately saved up my allowance for months and calculated how much cost. It would fall under media literacy because Nintendo was quite a large part of my child hood, and I was a big fan of their games and consoles. I chose this picture because I would play Mario Kart with my younger brother, and we had a lot of fun playing together.
  • I went to Pakistan.

    I went to Pakistan.
In 2006, I went to Pakistan with my family. It was my first experience on an airplane, and I was thrilled. This event would be classified as social literacy, because I was able to learn about my heritage, and celebrate Eid with my father's side of the family. I chose this particular picture because traditionally, we apply mehndi (or henna) on our hands for special events like Eid or weddings. The night before Eid, I would go to a parlour with my cousins to get our mehdi done.
  • I recieved my first phone

    I recieved my first phone
I recieved my first phone during my last year in middle school. This event would be catogorized as social literacy since it was becoming commonplace for most people to have at least a flip phone for communication as cell phones overtook landlines. I chose this picture because my phone become the main source of communication with friends and family that lived in other states. Without a phone I would not have been able to talk to them as often.
  • I discovered the Percy Jackson series

I discovered the Percy Jackson series
The introduction of Percy Jackson into my life would be classified as media literacy because I only started reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan only because I thought the trailer for the movie looked pretty amazing. It is quite likely that I wouldn't have showed an interest in the books if people were not buzzing about the movie. I chose the movie poster as the picture fr this event because I only became interested in the books after seeing the trailer for the movie.
  • I began to apply for college

I began to apply for college
When I started to apply for college, I was struck with the reality of how expensive it was. This event in my life would be classified as financial literacy, because I actively began seeking out scholarships, and tried to save all the money that I could so that I could cover any leftover costs of textbooks and such. I chose this picture because I remembered being incredibly overwhelmed by the amount deadlines, as well as the cost of higher education.
  • I began to shadow at a hospital

I began to shadow at a hospital
During my senior year, I was enrolled in HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America). My experience with HOSA would be classified under social literacy. I learned a tremendous amount about the inner workings of a hospital, and it helped me to narrow my career choices. I chose this picture because most of my shadowing experience involved the nurses and technicians I followed teaching me what they could about different procedures and equipment.
