The US invasion of Panama lasted for a month, from December 1989 to January 1990. The invasion occurred as a way to resolve the issue of Manuel Noriega, who was a leader in Panama but wanted for drug trafficking in the United States. Panama was significant to the United States also because in 2000 the control of the Panama Canal was to be given to Panama. The invasion was not an extreme hit, as it was seen as a violation of international law by the United Nations General Assembly.

Jim Henson was a famous puppeteer and animator who died at the age of 52, in New York. Jim Henson was known for creating The Muppets and directed movies such as Labyrinth. He died suddenly from bacterial pneumonia known as Group A streptococcus. Henson did not realize what he had till it was too late and pneumonia destroyed his lungs. Following his death, Jim Henson got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was later named a Disney Legend.

On January 7, 1991, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a famous basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers, announced he was HIV positive. HIV is the virus that can cause AIDS, and because of this, he was retiring. His announcement is extremely significant because it broke the stigma around HIV. Johnson has continued to be a spokesperson for AIDS awareness.

The L.A. riots occurred after four police officers were seen unarmed Rodney King, an African American motorist. The verdict pleaded these men not guilty, and the reaction that occurred was the riots. The riots at first were just angry responses, but they turned into violence, and eventually, entire buildings were being set on fire. Overall, the riots resulted in hundreds of deaths and the eventual prosecution of some of the police officers who beat Rodney King.

Hurricane Andrew formed on August 16 in the Atlantic Ocean and did not hit land until the 26. When it eventually hit, it hit Louisiana, Florida, and the Bahamas as a category 5. The hurricane destroyed houses and killed a total of 65 people. Hurricane Andrew was the most destructive and costive hurricane until Irma, which occurred nearly 25 years after.

The North American Free Trade Agreement, also known as NAFTA, was passed in the United States at the start of 1994. This agreement replaced the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement of 1988. NAFTA created the largest/one of the largest trade blocs. The process of creating the trade bloc started during Regan's presidency but was actually completed during Clinton's presidency.

The bombing of Olympic Park occurred in Atlanta, Georgia during the Summer Olympics in 1996. The bombing was the act of a man named Eric Rudolph, although for many years the FBI looked into Richard Jewell as a suspect. Richard Jewell had discovered the bomb and attempted to clear as many spectators as possible, which caused him to be a suspect although innocent. The killing directly killed one person, but 111 were injured.

The bombing of Yugoslavia was an airstrike that lasted for about three months during the Kosovo War. The bombings ended when an agreement between the two was created. The purpose of the bombings was to convince the Yugoslav armies to remove themselves from Kosovo, which was a part of the agreement. Another part of the agreement that came with the end of the bombings was the establishment of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, which was a way of peacekeeping.

The Columbine massacre occurred at Columbine High School in Colorado. The attack was meant to be both a shooting and bombing, but fortunately, the bombs created by the two students failed. The boys killed 13 in total, 1 teacher and 11 students, before killing themselves. This massacre is significant because at the time it was the deadliest that had occurred, and also led to the way for "copycat" killings.

The Y2K Scare occurred across the nation as the end of 1999 was approaching. Up to this point computers only presented the year by the last two digits, as constantly including the 19 at the front took up to much computer storage. The scary part was that computers might register the new year as 1900 instead of 2000 since they both end in '00. This issue would cause businesses that relied on computers to be at risk. To solve this issue, computers just resorted to showing all four digits.
