    The 1891 constitutional convention held in Sydney in 1891 March to consider a draft constitution for proposed federation of the British colonies in Australia and New Zealand. There were 46 delegates at the convention chosen by the seven colonial parliaments. Convention approved a draft largely written by Andrew Inglis Clark.

  • New Zealand gave women the vote

    On 19 September 1893 the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law. As a result of this landmark legislation, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

    Held in stages. First met in Adelaide Marcy 1897, secondly in Sydney in August 1897 and thirldy in Melbourne in sweltering heat of January 1898. By this time New Zealand had lost interest in federating with the Australian colonies and was not represented. In QLd the parliament had not passed necessary legislation so the northern colony was not represented.
